Goals of Psychology
Psychology is the science concerned with the study of human behavior and mental and cognitive processes in a scientific and academic way. It primarily focuses on human beings, although some psychological research may also study animal behavior in specific research contexts.
Psychology also refers to the application of psychological knowledge across many areas of human activity, including education, work, relationships, mental health, and understanding the challenges individuals may face in everyday life.
In short, psychology can be described as the scientific study of thought, mind, behavior, and personality. It aims to understand human behavior, explain it, predict it, and influence it through scientific methods.
Goals of Psychology
Psychology seeks to achieve a number of core goals that help us understand human behavior and mental processes. The most important include:
- Studying and understanding human behavior and developing scientific explanations for it.
- Predicting how human behavior may occur under certain situations or conditions based on available knowledge and evidence.
- Influencing or regulating behavior scientifically by understanding the factors that affect it and developing appropriate methods or interventions.
Fields of Psychology
Throughout its history, psychology has been influenced by several schools and intellectual approaches. These include psychoanalysis, which is historically associated with Sigmund Freud, and behaviorism, which was influenced by Ivan Pavlov's research on conditioning and learning and later developed through the work of other behavioral psychologists. As psychology evolved, many theoretical and applied branches emerged.
Main Theoretical Branches
- Experimental Psychology
This branch studies perceptual and motor processes and different human abilities. It is particularly concerned with topics such as visual and auditory perception, learning, attention, and cognitive processes.
- Physiological Psychology
This branch studies the relationship between physiological processes and behavior, including how the brain, nervous system, and other biological factors may relate to behavior and mental processes.
- Developmental Psychology
Developmental psychology focuses on the changes people experience throughout different stages of life, from childhood to older adulthood, including cognitive, social, emotional, and physical development.
- Social Psychology
This branch studies how groups and social situations influence an individual's behavior, thoughts, and emotions, as well as how individuals influence the social environments around them.

- Industrial and Organizational Psychology: applies psychological principles in workplaces and organizations and studies topics such as performance, motivation, training, employee selection, and improving the work environment.
Psychology therefore focuses on the scientific study of behavior and mental processes. It aims to understand, explain, predict, and influence behavior, while also including a wide range of theoretical and applied fields that use psychological knowledge in different areas of life.
