What Is Sports Nutrition?
Sports nutrition includes several important aspects, such as:
- The type of food suitable for athletes.
- The amount of energy the body needs daily.
- The essential nutrients that should be included in the diet.
- The amount of fluids an athlete’s body needs throughout the day.
- The timing of meals before and after exercise according to the type of sport and the goal.
In some cases, an athlete’s diet may change from one day to another depending on training intensity, the type of sport, and the amount of energy the body needs. Therefore, sports nutrition differs from one person to another, and there is no single plan that suits all athletes.
Three Basics of Sports Nutrition
Athletes obtain the energy and nutrients they need from food and fluids. These nutrients help them perform physical activities and maintain overall health. The most important basics that should be included in the daily diet are:
1. Carbohydrates
Carbohydrates are the main source of energy. The digestive system breaks them down into glucose, which is then distributed through the bloodstream to organs, cells, and tissues to be used as a source of energy.
Carbohydrates are divided into two types:
- Simple carbohydrates: Found in natural sugars in fruits, vegetables, and dairy products.
- Complex carbohydrates: Found in whole grains, potatoes, oats, and most vegetables.
2. Proteins
Proteins play an important role in building muscles, repairing tissues, and supporting recovery after exercise. Proteins are divided into:
- Complete proteins: Usually found in animal sources such as meat, fish, poultry, eggs, and dairy products.
- Incomplete proteins: Usually found in plant sources such as legumes, nuts, grains, and some vegetables.
3. Fats
Fats are an important source of energy. They also help the body absorb certain vitamins and support several body functions. Fats are divided into:
- Saturated fats: Found in fatty meats and full-fat dairy products, and it is preferable not to consume them excessively.
- Unsaturated fats: Found in plant oils such as olive oil, nuts, and avocado, and they are considered healthier options when consumed in suitable amounts.
Athletes’ Daily Nutritional Needs
Athletes’ daily nutritional needs vary according to the type of sport, training intensity, activity duration, and athletic goal, whether the goal is increasing muscle mass, improving performance, or reducing body fat.
First: Carbohydrates
Carbohydrates may represent an important part of an athlete’s daily diet because they are the main source of energy during exercise. The suitable amount varies according to the type of physical activity.
Second: Proteins
Athletes’ protein needs vary according to weight, type of sport, training intensity, and training phase. Therefore, it is preferable to determine the suitable amount with a nutrition specialist, especially for professional athletes or those following intensive training programs.
Third: Healthy Fats
Athletes need a suitable amount of healthy fats within their daily diet, with a focus on unsaturated fat sources and reducing saturated and processed fats as much as possible.

Should Athletes Take Dietary Supplements?
Not every athlete needs to take a dietary supplement. In many cases, a balanced diet may be enough to cover the body’s needs for energy and nutrients.
Dietary supplements should not be taken without consulting a doctor or nutrition specialist, because the need for supplements differs according to health condition, diet, training intensity, and lab results when needed.
Supplements commonly used in gyms, such as sports drinks, protein powders, and creatine, should also be handled carefully. Using them incorrectly or buying them from unreliable sources may cause health problems for some people.
Important Notice
If you have kidney disease, liver disease, heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, or take regular medication, do not use any sports supplement unless you consult a doctor or nutrition specialist first.
