A variety of behavior modification strategies can be used individually or in combination, including:

  • Positive reinforcement: Offering an individual something desirable after desirable behavior. For example, a child may receive a reward or praise after following parental instructions.
  • Negative reinforcement: The removal of an unwanted object to an individual after desirable behavior. For example, a child may be stopped from watching television after completing schoolwork.
  • Punishment is the act of offering an individual something undesirable after unwanted behavior. For example, a child may receive a reprimand after beating a brother.
  • Ignoring: Inattention to unwanted behavior. For example, parents may ignore a child crying out for their attention.
  • Behavior formation: Gradual behavior through small steps. For example, a child may be taught how to dress by helping parents at each step at first, then gradually letting the child do more on his or her own.
  • Time out: Prevents an individual from engaging in pleasurable activities after unwanted behavior. For example, a child may be asked to sit in a quiet place for two minutes after screaming.

In choosing a behavior modification strategy, it's important to consider the following factors:

  • Age and maturity of the individual: Some strategies may be more effective with younger individuals, while others may be more effective with older individuals.
  • Targeted behavior: Some strategies may be more effective at modifying certain behaviors than others.
  • Environment: Some strategies may be more effective in some environments than others. It's also important to use strategies consistently and consistently to ensure their effectiveness.
